: ’93: PUNCHING THE LIGHT
A raw visual document of Sydney’s ‘90s rave scene, captured by a teenager and published decades later.
A raw visual document of Sydney’s ‘90s rave scene, captured by a teenager and published decades later.
A love letter and exposé to the dreamland of raving. ‘93: Punching the Light comes from Sydney, Australia's warehouse hallways and dance floors between 1992-1993, when photographer Simon Burstall was just 17 years old.
Two decades later, I worked with Simon to transform his personal archive into a published book, gallery exhibition, and digital experience. We shaped his photographs, flyers, and handwritten diaries into a tactile record of both subculture and self-discovery—not just a document of ‘90s rave culture, but a coming-of-age story told from the inside.
I shaped the project into a cohesive editorial work that honors both the photographer’s personal story and the broader cultural moment. The result is a tactile document of ‘90s rave culture—a book that preserves an underground scene with the rawness, honesty, and urgency it deserves.
Published by Damiani and exhibited in New York, the project was covered by Vogue, Vice, i-D, and Creative Review, and became part of New South Wales’ HSC curriculum.
