Fortunato Mezcal
In 2019, Paul Bright embarked on a mezcal journey through the heart of Oaxaca, Mexico. He explored the rustic distilleries scattered across the region, tasting espadín, barril, tobalá, and tepeztate. His quest ultimately led him to San Baltazar Chichicapam, where he met Maestro Fortunato Hernández, a third-generation mezcalero who introduced him to the rare and complex arroqueño.
Captivated by its complexity, Paul committed to mastering the craft under Fortunato’s guidance, fully immersing himself in the Hernández family’s way of life. He worked and lived alongside them, learning from their traditions until his efforts were captured in this small batch of agave arroqueño—each bottle infused with a touch of luck and a story of passion.
